Turkey’s Role in Facilitating Peace Talks Between Ukraine and Russia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed his intention to discuss a potential end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This diplomatic move reflects Ankara’s efforts to revive peace negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow. Turkey’s Foreign Minister and other officials are actively exploring the possibility of hosting talks between Russia and Ukraine on Turkish soil.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that while there are no immediate plans for a conversation between Putin and Erdogan, it could be arranged promptly if necessary. This indicates a mutual openness to engage on critical issues.

Key Meetings in Istanbul

On October 31, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Istanbul for scheduled discussions with Erdogan, as well as a meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. The agenda included vital topics such as:

  • strengthening and restoring the Black Sea grain corridor;
  • ensuring food security;
  • enhancing bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Turkey.

Additionally, the leaders talked about preparations for an upcoming trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, planned for early November 2026. Notably, during a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on October 29, Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey’s readiness to support the resumption of diplomatic dialogue between Ukraine and Russia and work towards ending the war.

Turkey’s active engagement underscores its ambition to act as a mediator in the peace process, a role that could prove pivotal for regional stability. This initiative highlights Turkey’s increasing influence in international diplomacy and its potential to shape the conflict’s trajectory.

The cooperation among Turkey, Russia, and the United States could open new avenues for dialogue and help reduce tensions in the region. The planned trilateral meeting marks a significant step toward restoring peace and stability in Ukraine.

As diplomatic efforts intensify, Zelensky's willingness to engage with Putin in Turkey highlights the complexities of the ongoing negotiations. While discussing potential peace talks, the Ukrainian President firmly maintains his stance against any territorial concessions, emphasizing the delicate balance required in these discussions.
