The 'Rescuer City' Honorary Title

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has granted the honorary 'Rescuer City' distinction to four European cities: Budapest (Hungary), Gdańsk (Poland), Tallinn (Estonia), and Saint-Germain-en-Laye (France). This initiative recognizes their humanity, compassion, and solidarity with the Ukrainian people, as well as their support for Ukrainian citizens forced to flee their homeland due to the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The award highlights the critical role these cities have played in sheltering and assisting displaced Ukrainians.

Established by a presidential decree on May 22, 2022, the 'Rescuer City' title first went to the Polish city of Rzeszów. On April 4, 2023, a separate decree from the head of state formalized the regulations governing the award, its official design, and the standard template for the accompanying commemorative plaque. This step-by-step process underscores a consistent effort to acknowledge municipalities that have actively supported Ukraine throughout the war.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that these distinctions serve as proof of international backing for Ukraine’s defense of its independence and sovereignty.

The overarching goal of this initiative is to formally recognize those cities that demonstrated a willingness to help and stand by Ukrainians during a period of immense hardship.

International Support for Ukraine

Bestowing the 'Rescuer City' honors underscores the vital importance of global solidarity with Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict, while simultaneously strengthening ties between the Ukrainian people and nations that have shown such unity. This act not only acknowledges the efforts of these cities but also solidifies their status as allies of Ukraine, paving the way for deeper cooperation and the growth of lasting international partnerships.
