Hero of Ukraine Honors Bestowed
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has conferred the title of Hero of Ukraine, along with the Order of the Golden Star, upon Sergeant Serhii Krynytskyi of the 24th King Danylo Separate Mechanized Brigade. During his service, Krynytskyi held a defensive position in the town of Chasiv Yar for 346 consecutive days. In one assault, nine enemy troops approached his position; he eliminated two at close range and, working with his comrades, neutralized the other seven.
According to reports, Krynytskyi led the repulsion of at least six enemy assaults aimed at breaching the defenses. Thanks largely to his efforts, the stronghold held out for 400 days. After withdrawing from the position, he received the Presidential award 'For the Defense of Ukraine' as well as the brigade’s commemorative badge, number 001.
At first, I stacked the enemy bodies near the position. Then there were too many—I started burying them. So the enemy wouldn’t figure out where I was hiding by the pile of their dead.
Serhii Krynytskyi
This account underscores his resolve and readiness to act under extreme conditions. He was extracted from the position only when weather conditions allowed and holding it further became impractical. Before leaving, Krynytskyi destroyed everything so the shelter would not fall into enemy hands—a clear demonstration of his professionalism and dedication.
Awarding of Oleksii Mykhailov
President Zelenskyy also granted the Hero of Ukraine title to Oleksii Mykhailov, a company commander in the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Transcarpathian Brigade. These recognitions highlight the extraordinary courage and heroism of Ukrainian service members defending the nation amid war.
Bestowing the Hero of Ukraine award on Serhii Krynytskyi and Oleksii Mykhailov underscores the commitment and importance of Ukrainian troops in the fight for national security. These honors not only recognize individual achievements but also serve as a symbol of the army’s collective resilience during prolonged aggression. Such acknowledgments can boost military morale and provide momentum for continued efforts on the front lines.
