Ukraine's Highest Military Honor Bestowed

On the eve of February 24, 2026—the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion—Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded the nation's highest state honor, Hero of Ukraine, to five service members. Three of these awards were conferred posthumously. The ceremony underscores the immense sacrifices made since the war's escalation in 2022.

The Honored Recipients

  • Junior Sergeant Yuliia Khnykina
  • Senior Lieutenant Andrii Bublyk
  • Posthumous awards were granted to:
    • Lieutenant Oleh Kutsin
    • Captain Oleksandr Podvyshennyi
    • Senior Soldier Anatolii Stepanenko

President Zelenskyy also released a video address to mark this solemn date, which now symbolizes twelve years of war initiated by Russia with the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

This act of recognition serves as a crucial gesture to honor the memory of the fallen and to acknowledge the heroism of those continuing to fight for Ukraine's independence. By bestowing these awards on the invasion's anniversary, the state highlights the enduring contribution of its military in the struggle for national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Such public recognition reinforces the values of courage and sacrifice for society during wartime.
