Three Decades of Ukraine’s Constitution
Thirty years ago, a key pillar of Ukraine’s sovereignty was established: its Constitution. To commemorate this milestone, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the public, celebrating the anniversary of the nation’s foundational legal document. In his remarks, he underscored that the Constitution’s provisions have only become meaningful because Ukrainians are willing to defend their independence, land, rights, and freedoms. This anniversary comes amid ongoing challenges to Ukraine’s sovereignty, making the president’s words particularly resonant.
Zelenskyy, who is credited as an author of the Constitution’s text, expressed gratitude to all defenders of Ukraine.
“We thank every man and woman who is now protecting Ukraine,” he stated. He further emphasized that
“any articles of our Constitution would be just letters on paper without the millions of Ukrainians united and ready to defend our independence.”
Concluding his address, Zelenskyy assured the nation, “We will definitely preserve our freedom and independence.” These words served as a reminder of the importance of unity and readiness to protect the country amid contemporary threats.
The Constitution’s Enduring Role
The 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s Constitution highlights the document’s critical role in building the legal foundation of an independent state. Given the current challenges facing the country, the president’s call for unity and defense of independence carries special weight. It underscores the need to uphold national values and institutions that safeguard citizens’ rights and freedoms.
As Ukraine reflects on the significance of its Constitution, President Zelenskyy's recent initiatives further emphasize the importance of national unity and heritage. In a related move, he has proposed a bill to establish a national pantheon, aiming to honor those who have contributed to the country’s sovereignty.
