Appointment of Kostyantyn Humeniuk
On September 14, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree naming Kostyantyn Humeniuk as the new commander of the Medical Forces within the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This appointment followed a recommendation from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mykhailo Drapatyi, to relieve the previous commander, Anatoliy Kazmirchuk, who served from November 19, 2023, until August 2026.
Humeniuk brings extensive expertise in military medicine. He is a military surgeon, colonel of the medical service, honored doctor of Ukraine, doctor of medical sciences, and recipient of the prestigious Boris Paton National Prize. Previously, he served as the chief surgeon of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and actively participated in military operations during the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) and Joint Forces Operation (JFO). In his new role, Humeniuk faces critical responsibilities, primarily focused on safeguarding the health and lives of Ukrainian soldiers.
Background, Achievements, and Controversies
Anatoliy Kazmirchuk, the outgoing commander, was a major general in the medical service, doctor of medical sciences, and professor with notable accomplishments. However, his tenure was marked by several controversies, including his involvement in the demotion of Anton Shevchuk, head of the medical service of the 82nd Separate Air Assault Brigade. Shevchuk had raised concerns about defective Chinese-made tourniquets supplied to his brigade, which led to his reassignment to a lower position and a search of his residence. Following this episode, the faulty tourniquets were replaced.
The decision to appoint Humeniuk was made in coordination with Commander-in-Chief Drapatyi, who emphasized the significant challenges ahead for the new medical chief. Pavlo Palisa, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, highlighted:
“There is a great deal of demanding work ahead. The top priority in this position is preserving the life and health of Ukrainian soldiers.”
Humeniuk’s leadership signals a strategic effort by Ukraine’s military command to enhance medical support and care for service members.
