Yevhenii Khmara Takes the Helm

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Major General Yevhenii Khmara as the acting Minister of Defense. Khmara, who brings hands-on leadership experience from the Alpha Special Operations Center, previously commanded the mission to liberate Snake Island in 2022. In his new role, he is tasked with driving forward defense reforms and enabling long-range operations against Russia. This move comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen Ukraine's military command structure during the war.

Core Priorities and Expectations

Zelenskyy highlighted that Khmara brings proven results in long-range capabilities, robust security work, and management expertise—qualities that should serve him well as Ukraine's defense minister. The president also instructed Khmara to continue reforming the defense sector and deliver the results that have already been discussed. The key tasks ahead for the new acting minister include:

  • direct funding for combat brigades,
  • fair distribution of personnel,
  • maximizing the supply of all types of drones to the military.

Zelenskyy further stated that once legal procedures are completed, he will ask parliament to support Khmara's candidacy for the permanent position of Defense Minister. These steps are aimed at bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities amid ongoing aggression.

The appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as acting Defense Minister signals the Ukrainian leadership's intent to reinforce the country's defense capacities during wartime. Khmara's background in special operations and military management could prove decisive in implementing new defense strategies. The president's confidence in the newly appointed minister also underscores the urgent need for swift and decisive action to ensure national security and support troops in their missions.
