Taras Kachka Takes on New Role
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has named Taras Kachka as the official representative of Ukraine to both the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). This appointment was formally announced through a decree published on the official website of the Ukrainian President's Office. Previously, Kachka served as Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration from July 17, 2025, until July 14, 2026.
Following a government reshuffle on July 17, 2026, Kachka transitioned to his new diplomatic position based in Brussels. In addition to representing Ukraine at the EU, he will also assume the responsibilities of Ukraine’s trade representative. This move is seen as a strategic effort to deepen Ukraine’s collaboration with its European partners amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
Controversy Surrounding His Departure
Member of Parliament Yaroslav Zheleznyak shared insights into the circumstances behind Kachka’s departure from the Deputy Prime Minister role. He noted,
“The official reasons for his dismissal have never been publicly stated by the Presidential Office. However, the timeline speaks volumes: the individual who publicly assured international partners that Ukraine was committed to meeting anti-corruption benchmarks was suddenly removed without explanation. Sources indicate his dismissal was linked to candid remarks he made to the President and his inner circle about the negative consequences of breaking promises to partners. He also stressed the importance of following through on anti-corruption measures.”- Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
Kachka’s new appointment marks a significant chapter in Ukraine’s relations with the European Union, yet questions linger regarding his previous tenure as Deputy Prime Minister and the factors behind his dismissal.
This development represents a critical moment in Ukraine’s diplomatic engagement with the EU, potentially shaping future negotiations and cooperation in areas such as economic policy and security. At the same time, the unresolved issues related to internal governance and anti-corruption commitments remain a point of concern for Ukraine’s international allies.
