Ukrainian President’s Remarks

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has addressed the internet restrictions imposed in Russia that are set to last until May 9. He noted that while constant blackouts make it difficult for people in Moscow to access news, Russians are still aware they are losing ground every day. The Ukrainian leader emphasized that these measures are part of a broader strategy by Russian authorities, who have developed a plan to transform the country’s national internet segment into a state-controlled infrastructure.

Sanctions and Security

Additionally, President Zelenskyy highlighted sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom against 35 individuals and entities involved in the production of Russian drones. According to him, these actors are also recruiting foreign nationals to manufacture unmanned aerial vehicles and participate in the war against Ukraine. He stated that through fraudulent methods, these groups have sent citizens from North Africa and the Middle East to the front lines.

Meanwhile, Moscow is preparing to restrict mobile network operations during the May holidays. These measures stem from security concerns, which Vladimir Putin has publicly cited, calling internet shutdowns justified for safety reasons.

Information about the restrictions in Moscow came from telecom industry sources and operator notifications. Zelenskyy’s comments underscore the importance of information freedom and the role of international sanctions in curbing Russian aggression. The internet restrictions in Russia may signal a tightening of state control over information, with potentially serious consequences for society.

At the same time, the UK sanctions could hinder Russia’s military capabilities by complicating the supply and production of drones. These developments highlight the global nature of the conflict and the importance of international support for Ukraine.

As the situation evolves, the implications of the UK’s recent sanctions against individuals linked to drone production and foreign recruitment are becoming increasingly significant. These measures aim to disrupt the supply chains supporting Russia's military capabilities.
