Zelenskyy on Putin Meeting and International Negotiations

In an interview with Czech Radio, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that resolving territorial issues with Russia necessitates a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy stated,

“Agreements on territorial matters will be impossible to reach without direct contact at the leader level.”
He added that Ukraine remains open to negotiations involving Russia and the United States and believes Europe must be present at key stages of such talks. These comments highlight Ukraine's continued diplomatic push for a settlement, even as military conflict persists.

Security Guarantees and European Integration

Zelenskyy also emphasized the need for security guarantees from the United States and Europe. He expressed hope for progress on Ukraine's membership in the European Union, suggesting that 2027 could be a desirable target year for accession. However, final decisions on joining the bloc will depend on the agreement of international partners and ratification by parliaments.

In related diplomatic efforts, the first trilateral talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States concluded on January 24 in the capital of the UAE after lasting two days. The negotiations involved diplomats and military leaders from all three sides and focused on potential parameters for ending the war. A follow-up trilateral meeting is scheduled for February 1. The proposed peace program contains 20 points that could form the basis for further dialogue between the parties.

President Zelenskyy's statements point to an intensification of Ukraine's diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict with Russia. The emphasis on direct, high-level negotiations underscores a drive for a peaceful settlement of territorial disputes, which is critical for regional stability. The involvement of international partners like the U.S. and the EU could help ensure Ukraine's security and create conditions for its European integration.
