A New Chapter in Ukraine-Hungary Relations
Following the victory of Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar and his 'Tisza' party in parliamentary elections, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced optimism about resetting ties with Hungary. Zelensky congratulated Magyar on his success and expressed hope for stronger bilateral relations between the two nations. Hungary, a neighboring EU member, has often been a challenging partner for Ukraine, making this shift particularly significant.
In his remarks, the Ukrainian president stressed the value of good neighborly relations and mutual benefits for both peoples.
“I publicly congratulated Péter Magyar on his win. I genuinely wish for us to have good neighborly relations, and I truly support the people of Hungary. I very much want us to have strong, positive ties,”Zelensky stated.
The head of state also expressed confidence that a meeting with Hungary’s new prime minister is only a matter of time.
“I am sure there will be an opportunity, and we will meet with the new prime minister of Hungary,”he added. Zelensky underscored the importance of diplomatic efforts in fostering a constructive dialogue between the countries.
Financial Aid and Sanctions Package
Additionally, the Ukrainian president commented on the unblocking of a €90 billion EU assistance package destined for Ukraine, with the first tranche expected by late spring. Zelensky noted that Ukraine is fulfilling its commitments to the European Union, including matters related to the operation of the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline.
“Right now, we are effectively implementing the agreements with the EU to unlock a €90 billion credit for Ukraine over two years,” he said.
Zelensky also highlighted preparations for a new EU sanctions package against the Russian Federation, demonstrating the bloc’s active support for Ukraine. Despite previous tensions with Hungary, Ukraine continues to strengthen its ties with the European Union through international cooperation.
