Negotiations on the peace plan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an exclusive interview with Axios that he is ready to put Donald Trump's plan for ending the war to a referendum if Russia agrees to a ceasefire for 60 days. Zelensky emphasized the importance of achieving peace and the willingness to discuss options for a resolution to the conflict.

Zelensky's meeting with Trump is scheduled at Mar-a-Lago. As part of these negotiations, the U.S. also proposed a 15-year security pact with the possibility of extension. Zelensky noted that more time is needed for a quality resolution to the issue, stating:

“I think we need more than 15 years” - Volodymyr Zelensky

This indicates Ukraine's commitment to stability and lasting peace.

International contacts and referendum

Additionally, Zelensky held phone conversations with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. A conference call between Zelensky, Trump, and a group of European leaders is expected to take place on Saturday, which could serve as an important step in discussing peace initiatives.

The President of Ukraine also expressed his thoughts on the referendum, stating:

“It is better not to hold a referendum than to hold a referendum where people will not have the opportunity to come and vote” - Volodymyr Zelensky

This underscores the importance of ensuring democratic processes in the country, as well as the need for real conditions to conduct voting.

Given the complex situation in Ukraine, President Zelensky's statement concerns not only domestic politics but also international relations. Holding a referendum in the event of achieving peace could become an important step in supporting the legitimacy of political decisions among the population. At the same time, the readiness for a long-term partnership with the U.S. and European countries highlights Ukraine's strategic course towards strengthening security and stability in the region.
