Ukraine's Air Defense Crisis
In an interview with Tagesschau, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that approximately 80% of Ukraine's territory is currently unprotected against ballistic missile attacks. He emphasized that the air defense situation is critical, as a significant portion of the country lacks the necessary systems to counter this specific threat.
Zelenskyy also noted that Ukraine is in talks with a number of countries, including Germany, Norway, Canada, and Nordic nations, regarding the purchase of air defense systems. According to the president, each such system costs between $1.5 and $2 billion, with individual missiles priced at $2 to $3 million each.
Call for International Support
Furthermore, Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine has so far been unsuccessful in obtaining licenses to produce Patriot systems or their missiles. He remarked:
'I will not say where our Patriot systems are located. But on 80% of our country's territory, there are no such systems against ballistic missiles.' - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The urgent need to bolster air defenses was highlighted by a record number of ballistic missiles launched by Russian forces against Ukraine in January 2026.
Zelenskyy added:
'Even if we are not given the systems, we have found the money for them together with our partners.' - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
