Hopes for Peace

In an interview with The Atlantic, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope that the war between Ukraine and Russia could be halted before the start of summer. Zelenskyy stated that achieving this depends on the United States applying pressure on Russia and implementing a series of necessary steps. This statement comes as Ukraine continues its defense against the ongoing Russian invasion, now in its third year.

Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine and Russia should genuinely consider a chance for a ceasefire regime. He believes a key factor for this is the upcoming US midterm Congressional elections. The Ukrainian President emphasized that for former President Donald Trump, there could be no greater victory than ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, as it could become a central achievement of his political legacy.

Pathway to Peace

Zelenskyy suggested it would be most advantageous for Trump to achieve this before the midterm elections. He observed that while Trump seeks to reduce casualties, ending the conflict could also represent a significant political success for him. The Ukrainian President also pointed to the possibility that Russia might use this moment to end the war, given Trump's potential interest.

Zelenskyy outlined the sequence of steps required to end the active phase of the conflict:

  • Signing a security agreement with the United States.
  • Developing a joint plan for Ukraine's economic recovery involving American and European partners.
  • Agreeing on a detailed peace plan.
  • Having the final decision ratified by the Ukrainian people in a nationwide referendum.

Thus, Zelenskyy called for support of proposals that could accelerate the peace settlement process, stressing the need for active steps from international partners to achieve peace.

President Zelenskyy's remarks underscore Ukraine's pursuit of a peaceful conflict resolution, which holds significance not only for stability in Ukraine but also for the broader global political landscape.

US involvement in the process could substantially influence the course of negotiations, especially within the context of American domestic politics. The outcomes of the midterm elections may become a crucial factor in shaping Washington's foreign policy toward Ukraine, potentially affecting the chances for peace in the region. The international community continues to watch how these political dynamics will impact one of Europe's largest conflicts since World War II.
