Ukraine's President on the Outbreak of a Third World War

In an interview with the BBC, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin has already initiated a Third World War. Zelenskyy argued that the critical issue is now determining how much territory Putin can seize and how to stop him. He firmly rejected Russian demands for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from 20% of the Donetsk region, parts of Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, asserting that Ukraine's ultimate victory is inevitable. This stance comes as Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty against a full-scale invasion that began in February 2022.

The Critical Need for International Support

Zelenskyy further emphasized that the restoration of all Ukrainian territory would represent a victory for global justice. To achieve this, he highlighted the necessity of involving Middle Eastern nations and Turkey in conflict resolution efforts. According to him, U.S. Special Representative Steve Witkopf and the head of Ukraine's negotiation group, Rustem Umerov, are actively working on these diplomatic initiatives.

Assessing Russia's military capacity, Zelenskyy estimated that the country could rebuild its forces within two years. In contrast, he noted that European partners believe this process could take three to five years. These remarks underscore the urgency of the situation and the importance of sustained support for Ukraine's fight to preserve its territorial integrity. The disparity in these timelines highlights the strategic challenge facing Western allies in maintaining pressure on Moscow.

President Zelenskyy's comments reinforce that the conflict in Ukraine is not merely a regional war but a crisis with profound global implications. International backing and the involvement of third-party nations in peace efforts could be pivotal in halting aggression and achieving regional stability. The future actions of the Ukrainian government and the global community will significantly influence the conflict's trajectory and the prospects for a lasting peace.
