Emergency Energy Briefing Held

On January 20, 2023, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened a special emergency meeting focused on energy infrastructure, addressing the urgent need for repairs following a massive Russian missile and drone assault. The most severe damage and critical situation is currently reported in the capital Kyiv, the city of Kharkiv, and parts of the surrounding Kyiv region.

The occupying forces launched a complex attack on Ukraine, deploying a wide array of weaponry:

  • 339 attack drones,
  • 18 ballistic missiles of the 'Iskander-M'/'S-300' type,
  • 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles,
  • and one 'Zircon' anti-ship missile.

In response to this assault, President Zelenskyy directed the Prime Minister and the Energy Minister to provide, by 6:00 PM on January 20, a detailed analysis and timeline for restoring power infrastructure in every affected region. This relentless targeting of civilian energy grids is a hallmark of Russia's winter warfare strategy, aiming to break Ukrainian morale.

Call for International Support

The briefing was attended by all relevant government officials involved in damage response, regional authorities, military representatives, and energy sector leaders. Zelenskyy stressed that the circumstances in Kyiv, parts of the Kyiv region, and Kharkiv are the most dire. Furthermore, the President ordered the military to immediately contact international partners, specifically the United States, to provide a detailed briefing on the observed changes in Russian strike tactics. He noted that, according to available intelligence, at least some of the missiles used in this strike were manufactured by Russia this very year.

'Every package of support matters.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy

This event underscores the acute challenge of energy security in Ukraine amid escalating Russian aggression. Restoring critical infrastructure is vital for national stability and the well-being of citizens. Engaging international partners in both recovery efforts and strengthening defensive capabilities remains a crucial step in countering these external threats to the nation's resilience.
