Addressing the Fallout from Russian Attacks on Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened an urgent meeting of top officials to address the consequences of recent Russian strikes across the country. These attacks are part of a wider campaign targeting Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, particularly during the winter months. The discussion focused on a major drone assault on Odesa, damage to a key energy facility in Kharkiv, and a worsening heating crisis in the capital, Kyiv.
Drone Assault on Odesa and Its Aftermath
A total of 52 attack drones were used in the strike on Odesa, with a significant number aimed at the city center, including the area around the 'Privoz' market. While most of the drones were shot down, several hit targets within the city and the broader Odesa region. Rescue operations and debris clearance are currently underway to assess the full extent of the destruction.
In Kharkiv Oblast, a direct hit on a critical energy facility has been confirmed, and repair crews are now working to restore it. President Zelenskyy noted that specialists from Ukraine's State Emergency Service (DSNS), Ukrenergo, and Kharkivoblenergo are actively engaged in the recovery efforts at the site.
The situation in Kyiv is also a major concern. As of the morning of January 27, 926 apartment buildings in several districts on the capital's left bank remain without heat. The Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Internal Affairs are deploying additional generators, with reserves from across Ukraine being mobilized to assist the capital. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of national unity to stabilize the situation and ensure the state's resilience.
Meeting participants also reviewed the situation in the Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia regions. The President thanked everyone working for Ukraine and its people, stressing the critical need for a united effort during this difficult period.
