President Zelensky Meets with Finland’s and Sweden’s Prime Ministers
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks with Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, focusing on critical issues such as safeguarding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure against Russian attacks, bolstering air defense capabilities, military support, shelter construction, and the supply of Gripen fighter jets.
Strengthening Ukraine’s Security Support
In discussions with Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, the protection of civilian infrastructure was a key topic, especially as parts of the Volyn region and Kyiv remain without electricity following recent assaults. Finland plans to introduce new support measures for Ukraine within this month and has partnered with Ukraine to establish a coalition aimed at building shelters—a vital step toward civilian protection.
During his conversation with Ulf Kristersson, Zelensky emphasized the need to increase pressure on Russia and enhance Ukraine’s air defense and energy sectors amid its European integration efforts. Ukraine anticipates receiving Gripen fighter jets from Sweden soon, which will complement its existing F-16 fleet, particularly in intercepting jet-powered Shahed drones.
“They will complement our F-16s, especially in shooting down jet-propelled Shaheds,” President Zelensky remarked.
Sweden has also announced a new aid package totaling $2.7 billion USD, which includes a squadron of Gripen aircraft for Ukraine. Additionally, Ukrainian and Finnish firms have signed agreements to jointly develop and produce drones for Ukraine and the broader European market, signaling deepening military cooperation. This collaboration extends to maritime unmanned systems and ground-based robotic platforms.
Training of Ukrainian pilots and technical crews on Gripen fighters is already underway in Sweden. President Zelensky highlighted the continuous need for effective means to neutralize rockets and drones to protect lives and critical infrastructure, stating, “Every Ukrainian city and community must have proper shelters.” His remarks underscored the importance of military aid and civilian defense.
These meetings take place amid a tense situation in Ukraine, where Russian strikes against energy infrastructure pose severe challenges for civilians. Support from Finland and Sweden, through military assistance and advanced technologies, is poised to significantly strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities. This growing cooperation reflects increasing European unity in countering Russian aggression and backing Ukraine’s sovereignty.
As Ukraine continues to enhance its military capabilities, President Zelensky's discussions with Finland and Sweden echo similar dialogues with other European leaders. For instance, his recent meeting with the Dutch Prime Minister focused on support for F-16s and strategies to counter Shahed drones. This underscores the growing international collaboration aimed at strengthening Ukraine's defense posture.
