Zelensky's phone call with Trump's advisors
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone call with Donald Trump's advisors regarding territorial issues and security guarantees for Ukraine. This call concluded three days of negotiations between U.S. and Ukrainian officials that took place in Miami.
The phone call took place on Saturday, during which Zelensky spoke with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Witkoff and Kushner had previously met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday, to which Zelensky joined by phone. The negotiations from the Ukrainian side also included Rustem Umerov and Andriy Hnatov, who represented Ukraine.
Progress in negotiations and next steps
During the discussions, the parties made progress on the issue of American security guarantees for Ukraine. Umerov and Hnatov are to return to Europe to discuss American proposals, and further negotiations with Witkoff and Kushner are also anticipated. An important point is that Trump's plan was reduced from 28 to 19 points after the negotiations in Geneva.
Zelensky confirmed his willingness to meet with Trump depending on the results of the Moscow negotiations. In the discussion, Olha Stefanishyna noted:
'The main complex issues concern territorial matters and security guarantees. We strive to ensure that the agreed solutions are realistic, fair, and sustainable.' Olha Stefanishyna
Volodymyr Zelensky also commented: 'We went through the key points that could ensure an end to the bloodshed and eliminate the threat of a new full-scale Russian invasion.'
This phone call and the negotiations in Miami emphasize Ukraine's active efforts to seek international support for its security amid ongoing aggression from Russia. The reduction in the number of points in Trump's plan indicates a possible desire for more concrete and realistic agreements that could affect the further stages of the negotiation process.
As the parties plan to continue discussions, it is important to observe Russia's response and that of other international players to these initiatives.
