President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that on Sunday he held a phone conversation with Donald Trump for the second time in recent days . The main topic was strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities, specifically air defense systems. This news was announced by the president himself in an evening address.
According to Zelensky, Kyiv and Washington are "working in detail" on expanding support for the Ukrainian military. The main focus is on the following areas:
-
the transfer of new air defense systems, primarily Patriot systems;
-
the possibility of receiving long-range missiles, in particular, "Tomahawks";
-
expanding cooperation in the energy sector, including gas supplies.
The president emphasized that Moscow feels pressure and fears potential strengthening of Ukrainian capabilities.
"We see that the Russian Federation is afraid that the Americans might give us "Tomahawks". This is a signal that such pressure could work for peace," Zelensky noted.
In addition to negotiations with Trump, the Ukrainian leader also spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron. They discussed coordinating actions with partners, accelerating arms supplies, and aligning diplomatic steps for the coming weeks.
An additional topic was the security of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Zelensky emphasized that only Ukrainian control can guarantee its stable operation. Currently, the facility remains without stable power supply and has been functioning on diesel generators for nearly three weeks.
"This should not be the case. Russia can and must stop shelling so that repair crews can work," the president emphasized.
The head of state called on the IAEA for a clearer stance regarding Russia's actions at the Zaporizhzhia NPP and emphasized that Ukraine is ready to restore the safe operation of the plant with its own efforts.
Earlier, we reported that Zelensky signed a law providing for 50 thousand for those released from captivity.
