Ukrainian President Holds Talks with OSCE
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with the leadership of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to discuss Russia's ongoing attacks, diplomatic efforts, and potential cooperation. The meeting was attended by the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Swiss Vice President, Federal Councillor, and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis, as well as OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioğlu.
Switzerland began its one-year chairmanship of the OSCE on January 1, 2023, marking its third time in this role after previous terms in 1996 and 2014. During the talks, Zelenskyy explored potential formats for cooperation between Ukraine and the organization. The President specifically invited the OSCE to join the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, which seeks to repatriate children abducted by Russia. This meeting underscores the OSCE's continued, though challenged, role as a key European security forum since the onset of the full-scale invasion.
Appointment of a Special Representative
In a related development, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Pere Joan Pons appointed Karin Odbring as the Special Representative on Abducted Children, a decision following her visit to Kyiv. Switzerland's priorities for its OSCE chairmanship include:
- strengthening multilateral and inclusive diplomacy,
- promoting democratic institutions and the rule of law.
Zelenskyy and the OSCE representatives also discussed expectations for trilateral meetings of delegations scheduled for this week, indicating a potential intensification of diplomatic efforts to address the conflict and the issue of returning Ukrainian children. The OSCE has faced significant obstacles in its monitoring and diplomatic roles in Ukraine since 2014 due to Russian obstruction.
This meeting highlights the importance of international support for Ukraine amid its ongoing armed conflict with Russia.
The issue of returning abducted children has gained increasing global attention, making the appointment of a dedicated special representative a positive step toward a resolution. Enhanced cooperation between Ukraine and the OSCE could become a vital component of broader diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.
