Russia's Financial Gains from Middle East War

During an online briefing, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia is reaping financial benefits from the war in the Middle East. According to Ukrainian sanctions experts, Russia earned approximately two billion dollars in the first 15 days of the conflict. Meanwhile, Middle Eastern nations are suffering significant losses, with their revenues declining by 30 to 35 percent due to direct strikes. This dynamic highlights how regional instability can be exploited for economic gain by external actors.

Zelenskyy's Diplomatic Tour and Defense Partnerships

Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently concluded a series of visits to Middle Eastern countries to discuss defense cooperation. In Saudi Arabia, he held talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. These negotiations resulted in a new defense cooperation agreement between Ukraine and Saudi Arabia, focusing on technological collaboration and investments. Zelenskyy also traveled to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Countries that have approached Ukraine for its expertise in air defense systems include:

  • Saudi Arabia
  • Qatar
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Bahrain
  • Jordan
  • Kuwait
  • United States of America

Concurrently, close cooperation between Moscow and Tehran is being observed, with Russia sharing critical intelligence and some technologies with Iran.

Zelenskyy noted that while this situation may not assist Russia in the short term, it could have serious consequences if the war persists. 'This certainly will not help the Russians so much today, but it depends on how long the war lasts. If they projected a deficit of $100 billion by 2026, they could recoup that $100 billion if the war continues,' he remarked.

Thus, the Middle East conflict is impacting not only regional economies but also has global repercussions, particularly for Russia-Iran relations and the defense strategies of Ukraine's allies. The deepening cooperation between Ukraine and Middle Eastern nations could enhance these states' defensive capabilities, thereby influencing the regional balance of power. This may also pose new geopolitical challenges for Russia as it seeks to strengthen its position through partnerships with Iran and other actors in the Middle East.

As the conflict continues, the implications of Russia's actions extend beyond mere financial gains. Zelenskyy's remarks also highlight the troubling collaboration between Russia and Iran, which may serve to pressure the United States into reconsidering its support for Ukraine. To understand the broader context of these developments, explore how Russia's intelligence sharing with Iran could impact US aid.
