The Story Behind Volodymyr Zelensky's Decision

At age 16, Volodymyr Zelensky was awarded a full scholarship to study overseas, but his father refused to let him go. Today, Ukraine's president believes that choice was the right one. Had he left, he says, he would never have met his wife Olena, nor would they have their two children—son Kyrylo and daughter Oleksandra. Both children are currently in Ukraine during the ongoing war.

Zelensky shared this personal story on the talk show “Home Is Better!” He explained that his father made the call on his behalf, and while it may not have seemed fair or democratic at the time, he is grateful for it.

“My father made that decision for me. A person knows where they are needed. Because loneliness—in my opinion—is the worst feeling. I believe my father made the right decision.”

The Value of Family Ties

The president also stressed that leaving for studies would have meant missing the people who bring him joy.

“If I had gone, I wouldn’t have met the ones who make me happy. I wouldn’t have met my wife. And I wouldn’t have my children, the ones I have today. They are in Ukraine, at home—I am proud of them.”

Zelensky believes being at home matters more than anywhere else, even during the country’s most difficult times. He underscored the importance of supporting family and close ones, adding:

  • “We are still emigrants. Europe loves us very much now—that’s true—but let’s be honest... We are Ukrainians who came to them. So I believe that where you are needed is far more important for you, and it was for me, and it still is for me now.”

These remarks highlight his deep commitment to Ukraine and the significance of staying in one’s homeland amid hardship.

This story goes beyond the president’s personal experience. It touches on broader social and cultural themes relevant to Ukrainians around the world. In times of war and national challenge, the importance of family bonds and support for loved ones becomes especially profound. It shows that even in emigration, many Ukrainians remain devoted to their homeland. Zelensky’s words serve as a reminder that true value lies in where you feel at home, no matter the circumstances.

In light of Zelensky's reflections on family and the importance of staying connected to one's roots, it's worth noting the current situation of his children amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. For the first time, the president has shared details about their whereabouts, emphasizing the significance of family during these challenging times.
