Emergency Energy Summit Convened
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened a special emergency meeting on energy issues on January 15, 2023. Ukraine's Energy Crisis Worsens
Ukraine's energy grid has been under immense pressure since a massive attack on January 9, 2023, which forced Kyiv into a state of emergency power outages. As a result, hundreds of buildings in the capital remain without heating. In response, President Zelenskyy announced the potential suspension of curfews in certain cities and communities for the duration of the energy emergency to ensure more comfortable conditions for residents and businesses.
The President stressed the critical need for cooperation with local authorities, expecting their full engagement.
"We need sufficient relaxations during this exceptionally cold weather so that people and businesses have all the necessary opportunities," he emphasized.Zelenskyy instructed the government to separately address the requests and situation in the Chernihiv region, which he described as particularly difficult. Commenting on the state of affairs in Sumy, the President noted, "We are trying to help."
Furthermore, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a separate meeting with Ukraine's Minister of Defence and the Commander of the Air Force, dedicated to issues of protecting energy facilities. These steps are designed to enhance the security and stability of Ukraine's energy system amid the ongoing challenges the country faces. Protecting critical infrastructure has become a central pillar of national defense strategy.
