Ukrainian President Meets German Bundestag President in Kyiv

On March 11, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Julia Klöckner, President of the German Bundestag, in Kyiv. This high-level diplomatic meeting focused on several critical areas of cooperation, including:

  • military and energy assistance;
  • joint drone production;
  • preparations for future negotiations;
  • financial allocations.

Germany's military aid to Ukraine for 2024 is set at €11.5 billion, underscoring Berlin's sustained support amid the ongoing war. This meeting highlights Germany's role as a key European partner for Ukraine.

This was Julia Klöckner's first visit to Kyiv since her election to office, made at the invitation of Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk. During a speech in the Ukrainian parliament, Klöckner announced that Berlin would allocate an additional €200 million specifically for reconnaissance drones and bolstering civil defense. These steps signal a deepening of defense sector collaboration between the two nations.

Key Topics of Discussion

The leaders' agenda covered a broad range of strategic issues, including:

  • the continuation of military aid;
  • strengthening air defense capabilities;
  • development of the PURL program;
  • expanding joint drone production;
  • the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region;
  • preparations for the next round of Ukraine-U.S.-Russia delegation talks;
  • Ukraine's accession to the European Union;
  • unblocking the 20th sanctions package;
  • implementation of the agreement to allocate €90 billion to Ukraine over the next two years.

"We are also grateful for the energy support throughout this long, difficult winter with its hundreds of challenges over these months. And we are grateful that we were not alone; Germany also made its contribution. Thank you from all our Ukrainians. And I will say frankly, we simply have no time to relax. We have already prepared plans for energy resilience for the next year."

- Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The meeting demonstrates a significant deepening of Ukraine-Germany cooperation, particularly in vital military and energy support as Ukraine continues to face aggression. Germany's support, through substantial financial commitments and military aid, along with its active role in international negotiations, underscores the strategic importance of the bilateral relationship. As Ukraine confronts numerous challenges, such diplomatic efforts are crucial for strengthening its position on the global stage.
