Presidential Phone Call Between Ukraine and France

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on January 24, 2024. The discussion centered on military assistance for Ukraine amid the intensifying conflict with Russia. The leaders addressed recent Russian strikes on civilian targets, including an attack on a passenger train in the Kharkiv region, as well as the situation on the front lines and Russian military losses. This call underscores the ongoing diplomatic and military coordination between Kyiv and its Western allies.

The presidents also covered diplomatic efforts, specifically trilateral meetings in Abu Dhabi and preparations for future ones. A significant part of the conversation focused on combating Russia's shadow fleet, with Macron outlining legislative work being done on this issue. Special attention was given to strengthening Ukraine's energy resilience.

Military Assistance for Ukraine

As part of the newly agreed aid, Ukraine will receive generators from France in the near term. Additional deliveries planned for this year include:

  • additional French aircraft;
  • missiles for air defense systems;
  • aerial bombs.

Ukraine anticipates further supplies of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets from France, as well as missiles for various air defense systems. This military support is critical as Ukraine faces continued aerial bombardment and seeks to bolster its defensive capabilities.

The conversation between the two leaders is significant within the context of ongoing military operations in Ukraine and the international support the country receives in countering Russian aggression. The French military aid, particularly the supply of aircraft and air defense systems, could substantially impact the frontline situation by enhancing Ukraine's defensive strength. The diplomatic efforts discussed indicate a heightened level of international coordination aimed at resolving the conflict and supporting Ukraine on a global scale.
