Four Freedoms Award Honors Zelenskyy and the People of Ukraine

Вручення премії Чотирьох Свобод на знак визнання внеску Зеленського та українського народу в боротьбі за свободу.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian People Receive International Four Freedoms Award

The award ceremony, scheduled for April 16 in Middelburg, will recognize the extraordinary courage and resilience demonstrated by Ukrainians. This honor underscores the significance of their struggle for freedom and independence, which has persisted since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.

The Four Freedoms Award

Established in honor of the four essential human freedoms articulated by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941, the award celebrates commitment to the following principles:

  • Freedom of speech
  • Freedom of worship
  • Freedom from want
  • Freedom from fear

It is presented annually to individuals or organizations that show remarkable dedication to upholding these ideals. The award's prestigious history includes past laureates such as Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Angela Merkel, and the Dalai Lama. This places the Ukrainian recipients among a distinguished group of global advocates for liberty.

The Roosevelt Foundation emphasized that 'since the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people have fought tirelessly for their freedom and independence.' By conferring this international prize, the Foundation's board aims to express its solidarity with Ukraine's president and its citizens.

'In defending itself against Russian aggression, Ukraine is safeguarding not only its own sovereignty but also the fundamental values underpinning Europe and the international rule of law. This demands immense courage, resilience, and leadership.' The Roosevelt Foundation

Following the award ceremony, President Zelenskyy is scheduled to hold talks with King Willem-Alexander and Prime Minister Mark Rutte, highlighting the crucial role of international diplomatic support for Ukraine during this challenging period. Each award medal is accompanied by a monetary prize, which may provide additional support to the laureates.

Receiving the Four Freedoms Award represents a major acknowledgment of Ukraine's efforts to protect democratic values and human rights amidst war. This event not only highlights the broad international backing for Ukraine but also serves as a reminder to the global community of the imperative for unity in the defense of freedom. The subsequent meeting between President Zelenskyy and European leaders could prove a vital step in strengthening diplomatic ties and securing further assistance for Ukraine's fight for independence.

As the world acknowledges Ukraine's unwavering fight for freedom, Zelenskyy's recent visit to Zakarpattia further emphasizes his commitment to honoring those who defend the nation's sovereignty and the importance of community support during these challenging times.
