Ukrainian President Meets Norwegian Prime Minister
Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Yerevan. The strategic partnership between Ukraine and Norway took center stage, with a particular focus on a drone-related agreement. Discussions also covered bolstering Ukraine’s air defense systems and energy assistance, including the country’s natural gas requirements for the coming winter.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Norway for its ongoing support, notably its nearly $1 billion contribution to the PURL program.
“Russia continues its ballistic strikes without pause, so timely replenishment of PURL is critical,” the Ukrainian president stated. He also briefed Støre on Ukraine’s needs, especially regarding natural gas for the next winter, emphasizing that “Ukraine must enter that season fully prepared.” Zelenskyy thanked Norway and Prime Minister Støre personally for their willingness to assist.
Ukraine’s Active Foreign Policy
The meeting took place during Zelenskyy’s visit to the Armenian capital, where he arrived on May 3 to attend the European Political Community summit. Earlier, the Ukrainian president held a phone call with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, underscoring Ukraine’s proactive diplomatic engagement amid ongoing security and energy stability challenges.
This interaction between Ukraine and Norway is part of broader efforts to address threats from Russia and secure vital resources. The focus on enhancing air defenses and meeting energy needs highlights Ukraine’s drive to strengthen its security and resilience. The Yerevan meeting may mark a key step in deepening strategic ties and securing additional support during this difficult period.
In light of ongoing discussions on defense cooperation, it's worth noting a recent agreement between Ukraine and Italy that also emphasizes drone capabilities. This collaboration highlights the growing international support for Ukraine's security needs as it faces persistent threats, further underscoring the importance of global partnerships in strengthening defense strategies.
