President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky during his visit to Rome held talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The parties discussed support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, and new formats of defense cooperation. This was reported by the 'Office of the President of Ukraine'.

Defense cooperation between Ukraine and Italy: what the parties agreed on

The main topic of the meeting was security and strengthening defense capabilities. Ukraine proposed a new format of cooperation to Italy - the so-called 'drone deal', which envisages the integration of technologies and experience in the field of drones.

According to Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine is ready to share its developments in drone production, electronic warfare systems, and air defense.

'We will only strengthen each other', - emphasized the president.

The parties agreed that teams from both countries would begin working out the details of this cooperation in the near future.

Italy's support for Ukraine: sanctions, aid, and EU membership

During the talks, Giorgia Meloni confirmed that Italy will continue its support for Ukraine in military, financial, and humanitarian areas. She stressed that aid to Kyiv is not only a moral obligation but also a matter of the security of the entire Europe.

Among the key areas of support:

  • further pressure on Russia through sanctions

  • participation in preparing a new package of EU restrictions

  • financial assistance for the stability of the Ukrainian economy

  • supply of equipment, including medical.

Separately, the parties discussed the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union and coordination of positions with partners.

Volodymyr Zelensky also reported on the situation at the front and emphasized the need for additional air defense systems. According to him, Russia is continuing its attacks, including using drones and missiles.

During the meeting, global challenges were also discussed, including the situation in the Middle East. The parties noted that conflicts in the region affect energy markets and living standards in Europe.

Italy remains one of Ukraine's key partners since the beginning of the full-scale war. Rome has supported Kyiv in energy, defense, and humanitarian aid, especially during the difficult winter of 2025-2026.

It is worth noting that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke in Parliament, distancing herself from Donald Trump after defeat in a referendum on judicial reform.
