Statement from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, President Volodymyr Zelensky made clear that Ukraine opposes engaging in discussions about a new European security framework with Russia until the ongoing war concludes and security assurances for Kyiv are established. He emphasized that negotiations involving Europe's security and Russia should only begin once the conditions for ending the Russian aggression are firmly agreed upon.

Ukraine’s Stance on Peace and Security

Zelensky voiced deep concerns about the risk of repeating the mistakes of the Yalta Conference, warning against a "Yalta 2.0" scenario that could result in Ukraine being divided by Russia. He stated:

"We refuse to accept a second Yalta. We will not allow Russia to divide us. We fight and die for freedom." Volodymyr Zelensky

The president called on the United States to increase its support for Ukraine and adopt a tougher stance against Russian aggression, stressing that "Putin respects only strength—even if that strength comes from an adversary."

Addressing ceasefire prospects, Zelensky referenced the example of Oleshky, which demonstrated that agreements can be implemented quickly without extensive preparation. He also highlighted the role of drones in monitoring adherence to any ceasefire.

Previously, skepticism surrounded the progress of trilateral talks between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia held in Abu Dhabi. Notably, former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for a major agreement raised concerns that it might fail to end the conflict and instead enable further Russian aggression.

Ukraine’s position remains firm: meaningful negotiations with Russia on European security can only take place after the war ends and Kyiv secures reliable security guarantees.

This declaration underscores the necessity for a clear and strategic approach to dealing with Russia. Given the historical lessons from agreements like Yalta, Ukraine is determined to avoid any outcomes that jeopardize its sovereignty. The statement also raises important questions about how the international community—particularly the United States—will respond to Ukraine’s calls for enhanced support and security guarantees.

As the situation evolves, Ukraine remains steadfast in its refusal to concede territory amidst shifting international dynamics. This comes in the wake of President Zelensky's strong stance against negotiations with Russia without prior security guarantees.
