Negotiations between Ukraine and the USA
On December 15, 2025, the second round of negotiations between Ukraine and the USA concluded in Berlin, involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and American special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The talks lasted almost two hours, during which the Ukrainian side rejected US proposals regarding territorial concessions to Russia.
According to Zelensky, a unilateral withdrawal of troops from Donbas would be capitulation. He also emphasized the importance of the American side remaining fully engaged in the peace process and trying to identify steps that could lead to a fair and sustainable end to the war. Zelensky noted that Putin wants territory and expressed concern that American representatives are effectively adopting the Russian position on this issue.
Meetings and Further Steps
After the negotiations, Zelensky met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. A scheduled meeting between Zelensky and European leaders is set to take place at 8:00 PM Kyiv time. Volodymyr Zelensky also stated his willingness to renounce NATO membership in exchange for security guarantees.
This round of negotiations highlights the difficult situation Ukraine finds itself in, trying to balance international support with demands for territorial concessions. The Ukrainian side's refusal to make concessions demonstrates determination in defending its national interests, while Zelensky's active diplomatic efforts may indicate a search for new ways to obtain international security guarantees. It is important that Ukraine continues to engage in dialogue with leading nations, seeking support in its fight for sovereignty.
