President Zelenskyy's Official Trip to Syria

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has concluded an official visit to Syria, where he held talks with Syrian officials. A central focus of the discussions was enhancing bilateral cooperation. As part of this diplomatic push, Ukraine intends to strengthen its diplomatic footprint in Syria by establishing an embassy in Damascus.

A round of negotiations took place in Damascus involving representatives from Ukraine, Syria, and Turkey. The participants addressed a range of issues, including:

  • Security matters,
  • Energy policy,
  • Economic cooperation,
  • Collaboration for regional stability,
  • Post-war reconstruction efforts.

During the talks, President Zelenskyy discussed the circumstances of Russia's war against Ukraine with Syrian Foreign Minister Ahmed al-Sharaa.

In a parallel meeting, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha negotiated with the head of Syria's Foreign Ministry, Aasaad Hassan al-Sheibani. The parties agreed to open embassies in Kyiv and Damascus in the near future.

'We will strengthen our diplomatic presence in Syria – our embassy will be operational. We are ready to cooperate in the sphere of food security and also regarding infrastructure. We have agreed with the President of Syria on serious contracts concerning the agro-industrial complex. And we see opportunities here for other countries in the region as well.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Zelenskyy also noted Ukraine's aim to demonstrate its presence in the Middle East, stating: 'Undoubtedly, Ukraine is showing that it is not only Russia that is present in the Middle East. Syria fought for itself essentially against Iran and against the Russians. Syria greatly respects Ukraine.' This visit and its outcomes signal an intensification of Ukraine's diplomatic efforts in the region and the creation of new opportunities for partnership. This outreach comes as Ukraine seeks to build international alliances and counter Russian influence globally.

The Visit's Significance for Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelenskyy's trip to Syria represents a significant step for Ukraine in expanding its diplomatic connections within the strategically important Middle East. Strengthening cooperation with Syria could open new markets for Ukrainian agricultural products and improve Kyiv's political standing in a region where it is actively working to counter Russian sway. The planned opening of embassies is expected to foster the development of bilateral relations and interaction in other critical areas such as energy and security.

As Ukraine deepens its diplomatic engagement in the Middle East, this visit marks a pivotal moment for bilateral relations.
