Ukrainian President’s Remarks at the European Political Community Summit
Speaking at the European Political Community summit held in Yerevan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that by the summer of 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin will have to decide whether to escalate the war or pursue diplomatic channels. Zelenskyy urged Ukraine and European nations to jointly pressure the Kremlin into choosing peace talks. He emphasized that any security agreements concerning Ukraine cannot be reached without the involvement of European leaders.
Expanded Talks and the Need for European Unity
During the summit, Zelenskyy held expanded negotiations with leaders of EU member states and institutions in a Washington-style format. The main focus of the meeting was strengthening Ukraine’s defense and energy capabilities ahead of the coming winter. In his address, the head of state stated:
“This coming summer will be the moment when Putin decides what to do next—whether to widen this war or move toward diplomatic paths. We must push him in the direction of diplomacy.” — Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy’s visit to Armenia was the first by a Ukrainian president in 24 years. Armenia, a member of a military alliance with Russia, hosts a Russian military base on its territory. The European Political Community summit brought together leaders from 48 states and governments under the motto ‘Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe.’
Zelenskyy also highlighted the importance of a unified European voice in negotiations with Russia: “We are in contact with the United States, and we understand their vision and position. But it would be good to develop a common European voice for talking to the Russians.” He stressed that the coming months will be decisive for the future course of military operations, and the global community must create conditions that prevent the aggressor from continuing hostilities.
Zelenskyy’s statements at the Yerevan summit underscore the critical role of international support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Coordination with European countries and a shared stance on negotiations could be key factors in achieving a peaceful resolution. As tensions rise, it is essential for the global community to maintain pressure on the aggressor to steer it toward constructive dialogue.
As the stakes rise for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, the role of key allies becomes increasingly crucial. In this context, Germany's strategic partnership with Ukraine is highlighted as vital for shaping the outcomes of future negotiations. Understanding the dynamics of these alliances will be essential as the summer of 2025 approaches and pivotal decisions loom for President Putin.
