Russian Sports Figures Targeted by Sanctions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a decree imposing sanctions on Russian athletes and organizations linked to the promotion of the war against Ukraine. Decree No. 60/2026 introduces restrictions against three individuals and two legal entities from the Russian Federation. This action is part of Ukraine's ongoing effort to counter Russian influence and propaganda across all sectors of society.
The sanctioned individuals include Russian boxer Yakov Bukin and the President of the Russian Paralympic Committee, Pavel Rozhkov. The decree also targets the Russian Esports Federation and its head, Dmitry Smith.
Scope and Impact of the Sanctions Package
The sanctions package mandates the following measures:
- Asset freezes;
- A ban on commercial activities;
- Travel restrictions;
- License revocations;
- Deprivation of state awards for a period of up to 10 years.
President Zelenskyy stated that
“sport cannot remain apolitical when it is used to support aggression, occupation, and war crimes.”He further emphasized that
“pressure on Russia must be maintained.”
This decree forms part of Ukraine's broader strategy to counter Russian aggression, which involves sanctioning not only state structures but also individuals who aid war propaganda. By targeting the sports sector, a major arena of public life, Ukraine underscores the complex interplay between international politics and athletics during times of conflict.
