China’s Influence on Russia Amid the Ukraine War
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pointed out that China wields significant influence over Russia but stops short of pressuring Moscow to end the conflict in Ukraine. In an interview with Japan’s NHK broadcaster, Zelensky expressed disappointment that Beijing has not encouraged Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in peace talks, despite its potential to do so.
“It’s unfortunate that China is not politically aligned with us in this war,”Zelensky stated, emphasizing that the challenge is not just about arms supplies but also political will.
Military Collaboration with Japan and North Korea’s Involvement
Zelensky also revealed that North Korea has deployed between 30,000 to 50,000 troops to support Russia. He noted these forces suffered heavy casualties during the Battle of Kursk and subsequently refrained from entering Ukrainian territory. The president added that North Korea has gained combat experience from the conflict and used the opportunity to train drone operators.
Looking ahead, Ukraine aims to strengthen its defense ties with Japan, particularly in drone technology.
“Kyiv intends to build military-technical cooperation with Japan at both governmental and business levels,”Zelensky explained. He highlighted that over 70% of Ukraine’s defense industry is privately owned, underscoring the importance of agreements on drone supplies from Japan.
The president further stressed that China continues to supply Russia with technology and equipment, likely accompanied by technical experts. “I am aware that their technology reaches Russia. The equipment they use comes from China,” Zelensky said. He voiced concern that China’s greater support for Russia over Ukraine could jeopardize regional security.
