A Call for Defense Autonomy

Speaking at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan on May 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged European nations to produce all their own defense equipment independently. He stressed that Europe must be capable of protecting itself against a wide range of threats, including ballistic missiles and other advanced weaponry.

“I believe Europe must be able to independently produce everything needed to defend against everything,” Zelenskyy stated.

The Drone Deals Initiative

During his address, Zelenskyy also unveiled the Drone Deals initiative, designed to enhance collective security across the continent.

“Drone Deals means joint work, joint production, and joint protection. Let’s move in this direction,” he added.
This proposal underscores the growing importance of collaborative defense efforts.

On the sidelines of the summit, Zelenskyy held bilateral meetings with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. These talks highlight Ukraine’s active diplomatic push to strengthen regional security ties with its European neighbors.

Zelenskyy’s address at the European Political Community summit reflects an increasing focus on Europe’s defense independence amid rising security threats. The Drone Deals initiative could mark a significant step forward in defense cooperation among European countries, ultimately reinforcing collective security. The series of high-level diplomatic engagements also demonstrates Ukraine’s commitment to deepening partnerships with European allies and addressing shared security challenges together.

In light of Zelenskyy's advocacy for European defense autonomy, it's noteworthy that Finland has recently committed $300 million to support Ukraine's efforts.
