Phone Call Between Ukrainian and Romanian Leaders

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with Romanian interim President Nicolae Ciucă after a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle crashed into an apartment block in Galați. The incident occurred during the night of May 29, when a Russian drone crossed into Romanian airspace and struck a residential building. The impact ignited a fire in a top-floor apartment, injuring two people who received on-site medical care.

Zelenskyy expressed solidarity with Romania and wished the victims a swift recovery. He emphasized the need for a firm, immediate, and principled response from Bucharest to the attack. The Ukrainian leader also confirmed that Kyiv is ready to contribute to Romania’s security.

“Our military personnel have been in contact since last night, and we have now discussed further coordination at the command level. We will remain in constant communication with Romania and continue working together to protect lives from all potential Russian threats,” he stated.

International Reaction and Broader Implications

Romanian military officials explained they were unable to intercept the drone because only four minutes elapsed between detection and impact, leaving no time for a response. In the aftermath, the United States, NATO, and several European nations condemned the Russian drone’s incursion into Romanian territory. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed he had no knowledge of the drone crash in Romania and shifted blame for the incident onto Ukraine.

Zelenskyy stressed that Kyiv can assist Bucharest, which has consistently supported Ukraine’s defense against Russian strikes for the past five years.

This event highlights the growing security risks facing Ukraine’s neighboring countries, as regional military activities increasingly endanger civilian populations. The international outcry reflects widespread concern over potential conflict spillover and underscores the urgent need for collective action to ensure stability in Eastern Europe. The evolving partnership between Ukraine and Romania in countering Russian threats is taking on new strategic importance, with potential implications for political and military dynamics across the region.
