New State Award Created
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a decree establishing a new state award for those who participated in mitigating the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. Decree No. 323/2026 was signed on April 20th. The award is designated for Ukrainian citizens who were directly involved in the response to this tragedy. It is important to note that the award cannot be conferred posthumously.
Award Description
The award is a round medal, 32 mm in diameter, made of yellow metal. The obverse features the radiation hazard symbol superimposed on a globe, alongside an image of the Chernobyl plant's fourth reactor. A circular inscription reads 'To the Rescuers of the World from Nuclear Catastrophe'. The reverse side bears the inscription 'For Participation in the Liquidation of the Consequences of the Accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant', encircled by a laurel wreath. The medal is attached to a ribbon, and recipients also receive an official certificate.
The award will be presented by the President or authorized officials. This initiative coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, which will be observed on April 26th. The Chernobyl explosion in 1986 was the world's worst nuclear accident, and its long-term consequences are still felt today. Additionally, Kyiv is allocating funds to assist those affected by the disaster. Over 53 million hryvnias from the city budget will be directed as one-time targeted financial aid to more than 42,000 residents of the capital.
This decree is a significant step in recognizing the contribution of the Chernobyl disaster responders, underscoring the importance of their efforts in ensuring safety and minimizing the consequences of the catastrophe.
The establishment of the award also reflects the state's commitment to supporting those who suffered as a result of this tragedy and serves as a reminder to society of the importance of remembering the events that occurred 40 years ago.
