Security Service Head Briefs the President

On January 28, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received a briefing from the acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Major General Yevhen Khmara. The briefing covered the SBU's combat operations, including actions conducted within the territory of the aggressor state. During the meeting, they discussed plans for new operations, which the SBU is continuously developing in response to the enemy's actions.

Major General Khmara presented information concerning the frontline, including the activities of the special forces unit 'Alpha'. President Zelenskyy noted that the SBU's measures on the aggressor's territory are a direct response to all strikes and crimes committed against Ukraine. He emphasized that the SBU's ongoing planning of new operations is actively altering the course of the war.

Appointment of a New Acting SBU Head

This meeting follows the resignation of SBU head Vasyl Maliuk on January 5, after which President Zelenskyy appointed Yevhen Khmara as the acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine.

The meeting underscores the SBU's increasingly active and direct role in Ukraine's war effort. The SBU, traditionally focused on counter-intelligence and internal security, has taken on significant military functions since Russia's full-scale invasion. The appointment of a new acting head and the discussion of forward-leaning operational plans signal a continued focus on proactive measures to counter the ongoing threat.
