Ukraine's Leader Calls for Direct Negotiations
On June 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging an end to the war through bilateral talks. He proposed setting a specific date for a face-to-face meeting and implementing a complete ceasefire during negotiations. Zelenskyy also called for a full prisoner exchange under an "all for all" formula and demanded the return of forcibly transferred civilians and children.
Zelenskyy ruled out holding the meeting in Moscow or Kyiv, instead suggesting neutral venues such as Switzerland, Turkey, or an Arab nation. He noted that the United States and European countries could join the bilateral track.
"The current front line is where diplomacy must begin," the Ukrainian president emphasized.
Heavy Losses and a Willingness to Talk
Zelenskyy highlighted significant Russian army losses in May, which he said exceeded 30,000 killed and severely wounded. According to his figures, 63% of Russian casualties are fatalities, while 37% are wounded.
"When Russia gets tired, changes happen," he stated, stressing that Ukraine has video evidence of every Russian loss.
The president also reaffirmed Ukraine's readiness for a full ceasefire during talks. In this context, he suggested that the United States could monitor the line of contact.
"Don't be afraid to exit the war—that's the main thing needed from you now," he urged the Russian side.
Intelligence reports indicate that Russia has drawn up war plans extending through 2027 and 2028, suggesting potential future escalation. There are also mentions of efforts to involve Belarus and the pro-Russian faction in Transnistria, as well as promises allegedly made to Putin in Alaska. Against this backdrop, Zelenskyy's peace overture represents a significant step in the protracted conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
