Olha Stefanyshyna's dismissal
President Volodymyr Zelensky has removed Olha Stefanyshyna from her position as Ukraine's ambassador to the United States. In a series of orders dated August 3 and posted on the presidential website, he also dismissed six other diplomats on the same day. Stefanyshyna spent just under a year in Washington, having been appointed to the post on August 27, 2025. Before that, she served as the head of state's special envoy for developing cooperation with the United States and held the role of vice prime minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
In late July, Stefanyshyna said she had not been asked by Zelensky to step down. In a Facebook post, she described the departure as her own decision, attributing it to personal circumstances.
List of diplomats let go
The other diplomats affected by the presidential decrees are:
- V. Khymynets, ambassador to Austria,
- V. Yevdokimov, ambassador to Tajikistan,
- V. Zhovtenko, ambassador to Kyrgyzstan,
- K. Zelenko, ambassador to Singapore and Brunei,
- V. Khomanets, ambassador to Tunisia and Libya,
- V. Omelchenko, permanent representative of Ukraine to UNESCO.
No decrees have been issued so far to appoint successors for any of the vacant diplomatic posts. The removals come against the backdrop of shifts in Ukraine's foreign policy, though the reasons behind these changes have not yet been publicly detailed.
This overhaul of the diplomatic corps could point to new strategic priorities in Ukraine's foreign policy, particularly in relations with the United States and other partners.
Such broad rotations are often watched closely by international partners as a sign of evolving policy directions. Attention is likely to turn to appointing replacements, with potential consequences for Ukraine's diplomatic ties and international support.
The recent changes in Ukraine's diplomatic representation may signal a shift in the country's foreign policy strategy. As the government prepares to appoint new leaders, it's crucial to observe how these adjustments will impact Ukraine's international relations. In a related development, President Zelensky has also confirmed appointments for senior deputy roles at the Foreign Ministry, which could further influence diplomatic efforts.
