Earthquake in Kamchatka caused a tsunami


A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 occurred near Kamchatka, leading to the formation of a tsunami. Videos of the consequences of the natural disaster appeared on social media, reported 'Glavcom'.



According to eyewitnesses from the eastern coast of Kamchatka, the height of the waves reached 3-4 meters. Japan and Hawaii announced the evacuation of coastal areas, and personnel from the 'Fukushima' nuclear power plant were evacuated. There is also a tsunami threat for Avacha Bay, where the strategic submarine base 'Rybačij' is located.





Strongest earthquake since 1952


According to preliminary data, this earthquake is the strongest since 1952 with a magnitude of 8.7. Strong aftershocks are expected, which may continue for at least a month and have a magnitude of up to 7.5, capable of causing tremors of up to 6 in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.



After the earthquake, a tsunami also hit the Northern Kurils.





It should be noted that the natural disaster occurred in a seismically active zone, where the Pacific plate interacts with the Okhotsk plate. The strength and duration of the earthquake were extremely high, as confirmed by local residents. Aftershocks were felt in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and other settlements.



No earthquakes with a magnitude of 8 or higher were recorded worldwide between 2012 and 2025 before this event in Kamchatka, making it unique in the last 13 years.
