Tremor Detected in Chernivtsi Region
Seismologists recorded a minor earthquake with a magnitude of 1.7 in the Dnistrovskyi district of Ukraine's Chernivtsi region during the night of February 4. The tremors originated at a depth of 3 kilometers and were classified as imperceptible to people on the surface.
This seismic event follows another earthquake felt just two days earlier, on February 2, in Crimea and southeastern Ukraine. The epicenter of that quake was located 10 kilometers deep, approximately 78 kilometers west-northwest of Kerch and 35 kilometers northwest of the town of Shcholkine.
This area has experienced similar activity recently; a slightly stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 2.2 was also recorded in the Chernivtsi region on December 15, 2025.
Seismic Activity in Ukraine
While typically low in magnitude, these underground tremors indicate ongoing tectonic processes across Ukraine. The country's seismic risk is not confined to one area, with events recorded in regions like Chernivtsi and Crimea, highlighting the importance of continuous monitoring to assess potential future hazards. Understanding this activity is part of broader geological research in Eastern Europe.
