Residents of two apartment buildings in Kyiv's Troieshchyna residential district endured five days without electricity or heating. The power cut caused indoor temperatures to drop below freezing, creating a serious concern for all residents, particularly the elderly. Following police intervention, restoration work finally began, with an emergency crew arriving just two hours after law enforcement was called.
Residents' Ordeal
The plight of the two affected buildings was highlighted by the fact that neighboring homes on the same street had full power. Residents shared their distress, reporting that apartment temperatures had reached critical lows.
"It's below zero in our apartments. Elderly people were saying goodbye to us last night—they weren't sure they would survive until morning in such cold," residents recounted.
They also emphasized that collective action by the residents was a crucial step in resolving the crisis.
"We don't want to create an image for the enemy, as if we are fighting amongst ourselves. No, we came out to get through to the utility workers, to make them finally come and help us. I put on every warm item of clothing I had," said the residents.
At the time of reporting, repair work was ongoing. While the cold water supply had been restored, only cold water was flowing from the taps. The situation in Troieshchyna remains difficult, but the combined efforts of residents and police are starting to yield results.
