New Batch of AIM Missiles Expected from Canada
Ukraine's Armed Forces are set to receive a new shipment of American-made AIM missiles from Canada. This was confirmed during a meeting between Ukraine's Minister of Strategic Industries, Mykhailo Fedorov, and his Canadian counterpart, Minister of National Defence David McGuinty. The confirmation of this arms transfer signals the continued military support for Ukraine from its Western allies. This support is crucial as Ukraine defends its airspace against sustained Russian aerial attacks.
Capabilities of the Three AIM Missile Variants
Ukraine already actively employs three variants of the AIM missile series, launching them from F-16 fighter jets and NASAMS ground-based air defense systems. The smallest of these is the AIM-9 Sidewinder. Weighing approximately 90 kg and measuring 3 meters in length, it is effective at ranges up to 35 km and can reach speeds of 3000 km/h. The Sidewinder is equipped with an infrared seeker, making it highly maneuverable in dogfights.
- AIM-9 Sidewinder: weight - 90 kg, length - 3 meters, range - up to 35 km, speed - 3000 km/h.
- AIM-120 AMRAAM: weight - 160 kg, speed - 4900 km/h, range - up to 75 km (with a potential of 180 km for modified versions).
- AIM-7 Sparrow: weight - 230 kg, warhead - 39 kg, range - up to 70 km.
'The AIM series missiles are highly effective due to their fire-and-forget capability, resistance to electronic countermeasures, various guidance systems, maneuverability, and ongoing modernization.' Ministry of Defence of Ukraine
The arrival of these new AIM missiles from Canada represents a significant step in strengthening Ukraine's air defenses, particularly as the conflict continues in the country's east. With their advanced capabilities, these missiles can substantially enhance the effectiveness of Ukraine's air defense network, which is critical for protecting its airspace and ensuring the safety of its civilian population.
