Ukrainian Strikes Weaken Air Defenses Near Kerch Strait, Opening Path for Potential Attack on Crimea Bridge

Атаки українських сил знижують ефективність протиповітряної оборони в районі Керченської протоки, створюючи можливості для майбутніх дій на Кримському мосту.

Ukrainian Military Targets Russian Infrastructure in Crimea

By striking military infrastructure in occupied Crimea, Ukraine's Armed Forces are significantly degrading Russian air defense systems around the Kerch Strait. This creates fresh opportunities for Ukraine to target the Crimea Bridge, a strategically vital and politically sensitive asset. These findings come from a June 26 intelligence update by the UK Ministry of Defense.

According to the report, Ukrainian strikes on Russian military assets in Crimea have weakened air defenses, particularly following a wave of attacks on June 20. Those operations targeted Russian air defense systems, fuel depots, and ferry infrastructure. The attacks took three vehicle ferries out of service. Notably, Ukraine first struck the Crimea Bridge in October 2022, after which Russia banned truck traffic from crossing it.

Current Situation in Crimea

Additionally, two railway ferries were hit in March and April 2026, and both are still believed to be undergoing repairs. Ukraine is employing attack drones and stand-off munitions to conduct these strikes from a safe distance, reducing risks to its own forces.

The Russian occupation administration has declared a state of emergency in Crimea and Sevastopol, underscoring the severity of the situation. As the UK Ministry of Defense notes,

“such a broad range of Ukrainian targets is degrading Russian air defenses even in priority and well-protected locations like the Kerch Strait. This expands Ukraine's ability to strike the Crimea Bridge.”

The Crimea Bridge remains one of Russia's most critical military supply routes to the occupied peninsula and a key symbol of Moscow's control over the region. These developments point to escalating tensions in the area and potential shifts in the military landscape.

The situation in Crimea remains tense as Ukrainian strikes aim to reduce Russia's military capabilities in the region. Weakening air defenses could give Ukraine a strategic advantage in future operations, highlighting the Crimea Bridge's importance as a logistics artery for Russian forces. The emergency declared by the occupation administration reflects the seriousness of the threat Russia now faces there.

The ongoing military operations by Ukraine have not only targeted the Crimea Bridge but have also significantly impacted Russian logistics in the region.
