Ukrainian Armed Forces broke through enemy defenses in Kupiansk
The Ukrainian defense forces have succeeded in Kharkiv Oblast, pushing the enemy out of most of Kupiansk. The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) broke through enemy defenses in the city center, controlling most of the railway junction. The main advance has been recorded along the P-07 (Kupiansk – Shevchenkove) and P-79 (Kupiansk – Chuhuyiv) highways. As of today, Ukrainian authorities control key transportation arteries, which may significantly affect the operational situation in the region.
Problems in Russian military positions
According to a report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) dated December 28, reports of AFU successes contradict Russian official reports that have until recently claimed 'full control' over Kupiansk. This indicates serious problems in Russian military positions, as propagandists acknowledge that concealing failures in Kupiansk is an attempt not to weaken Russia's position in peace negotiations with the USA. The success of the AFU seriously undermines the Kremlin's narrative of 'inevitable victory for the Russian Federation.'
Furthermore, it is worth noting that Russia is using the territory of Belarus to conduct war against Ukraine, which also affects the overall situation in the region. In light of these events, peace negotiations between Russia and the USA are scheduled for today in Florida, but the developments in Kupiansk may influence their course.
The successes of the AFU in Kupiansk demonstrate their ability not only to hold but also to regain control over strategically important territories. This could change the balance of power in the region, especially considering the importance of the railway junction for supplying military resources. Events in Kupiansk may also affect diplomatic efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict, as changes in the situation on the front may prompt the parties to reconsider their positions in peace talks.
