The Meeting Between Zelenskyy and Trump
In an interview with far-right blogger and Trump supporter Laura Loomer, Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that tensions with Donald Trump dissolved after a brief meeting in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican in April 2025. The encounter lasted 15 to 20 minutes and marked a pivotal shift in their dynamic. Zelenskyy stated:
'Absolutely. Our first turning point was in Rome, at the Vatican. It was a short meeting, but I’ve always said it was a historic moment because in 15 to 20 minutes, we transformed our relationship.'
He also emphasized the significance of such relations, adding:
'I am very happy because the lives of so many people depend on this kind of relationship and dialogue.'
A face-to-face meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump is now scheduled for July 28 in Washington. According to DW, the format is still being finalized—options include a brief encounter, a private one-on-one conversation, or an official visit to the White House. Meanwhile, Vice President J.D. Vance has urged giving Trump’s diplomatic approach a chance, though Zelenskyy noted that diplomacy with Russia has failed since 2014.
Outlook and Sanctions
Laura Loomer, a far-right influencer and close Trump ally, had previously questioned Ukraine’s integrity, calling the country corrupt. However, she recently posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she was wrong about Ukraine and Zelenskyy, writing:
'I truly said those things about Ukraine and Zelenskyy, and I’m not deleting my posts because I realized I was mistaken.'
Part of Zelenskyy’s conversation with Loomer was shared by the U.S. president on his Truth Social platform.
Separately, Senator Lindsey Graham passed away unexpectedly on July 11 at age 71. On July 23, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the prospects for negotiations, stating: 'We actually met with them two weeks ago in Turkey. I’d say we’ve met with the Ukrainian side far more often than with the Russian side, and I’m confident we’ll meet again when the opportunity arises.'
Against this backdrop, the U.S. Senate may vote next week on a new sanctions package targeting Russia. The bill has support from over 60 senators and also includes provisions for sanctions on Iran. The maximum secondary tariff rate has been reduced from 500% to 100%, which could affect international economic relations.
