Meeting of the Presidents of Ukraine and the USA
The Presidents of Ukraine and the USA, Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump, met on July 8 during the NATO summit in Ankara. During the one-hour negotiations, the main topics were:
- strengthening Ukraine's air defense;
- peace negotiations;
- the possibility of providing Ukraine with a license to produce missiles for the Patriot system.
Trump noted that the manufacturer of Patriot has not yet been informed about this, but expressed hope that Ukraine would be able to independently handle production.
Assessment of the Situation and Cooperation Plans
Separately, Trump assessed Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil refineries, calling them an escalation that, in his opinion, could lead to the end of the war. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that Washington is working on the possibility for Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory. Zelensky also announced the start of work on a drone agreement between Kyiv and Washington, noting that the initiative is currently on Ukraine's side.
During the meeting, Trump also mentioned his relationships with Ukraine, which he believes remain strong:
“We have developed a good relationship - from the Oval Office until now.” - Donald Trump
He reported that he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin the same day. Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's quick actions, noting that 'it is dangerous there, Ukrainian drones are flying there.' In the context of the possible provision of a license for the production of Patriot, Trump remarked:
“I say: make them yourselves. We will create production capacities, the company will come there.” - Donald Trump
This meeting is important in the context of current events and Ukraine's efforts to ensure its defense capability, as well as highlighting the active participation of the USA in supporting Ukraine. Strengthening defense capabilities, particularly through missile production, could significantly change the balance of power in the region and demonstrate strategic support from the USA in the face of rising tensions with Russia.
It is important to note that Zelensky's arrival in Ankara was a prerequisite for these negotiations, opening new opportunities for cooperation between Ukraine and the USA in the security sector. This meeting underscores the relevance of international support for Ukraine in the face of ongoing aggression, as well as the importance of active diplomatic efforts to ensure stability in the region.
