Meeting of Zelensky and Trump in Florida: what the presidents will discuss and what consequences await Ukraine

The planned meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and elected U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida takes place against the backdrop of significant differences in views on peaceful settlement. The key topic of the discussions is expected to be plans to end the war: Trump's 28-point proposal and Zelensky's 20-point plan.

The Ukrainian leader stated that his points are '90% synchronized' with the U.S., however, Trump immediately warned:

“I have not approved anything. If I approve it, then yes, if not, then no.”
Following the meeting with Zelensky, Trump plans to speak with the President of Russia, emphasizing his role as a mediator.

Context of the negotiations

The context of the negotiations is complicated by internal political events in Ukraine, where the NABU handed suspicions to a number of deputies from the ruling faction 'Servant of the People'. Europe's position also remains an important factor:

  • European leaders have expressed their readiness to send their contingents to Ukraine after the ceasefire.
  • Russia has responded with a categorical rejection of any such possibility.

The financial pressure on Ukraine is increasing, as confirmed by Zelensky's statement about a 'constant cash deficit'. The U.S. budget for 2025 allocates only $800 million for Ukraine over two years, while Taiwan has been allocated $11 billion, which may indicate a shift in priorities.

Trump's inauguration on January 21 will be the next key milestone, after which the contours of future American policy towards Ukraine may become clearer.
